This is a step by step walkthrough of the design process and decisions that were made as I designed the Mary Bakers Logo

CAKEFOLIO

First

Draft

We started with something simple, the name and services with a bit of symbolism. I designed the plate with some subtle shadows with the lighting from the right. The goal was to imply branded plate work.

The name was in two font styles cursive and Bold San Serif.

Client Feedback: The symbolism was a little shallow

Back to the drawing board

I thought about baking and more precisely the putting the finishing touches on a cake. After looking at hundred of cakes on the internet and consulting the client I designed something a little more tantalising for the symbolism. I decided to go with the bold font because it created a diagonal flow with the symbolism.

Client Feedback: The spoon symbol was on brand but the caking was unclear and the font was not on-brand.

BAKING A CAKE

Third

Draft

I thought about cakes again. What makes a good cake. The layers and flavours and drew a slice of cake from scratch and added layers in colours that were on-brand with the clients requirements. Since it was a slice I added a flavour stained knife and used the cursive font that the client had loved. The result was a slice of cake on a plate.

Client Feedback: Remove the knife and use the spoon from the previous iteration place the slice on a plate.

Ready to be served

The final logo was as thus. Using assets from previous iteration I moved from the original flat look and drew a plate beneath the slice and added some dripping on to it.
