DEFINITION

What is

a website

A set of related webpages under the same domain name. All content is usually related to an individual entity such as a person, a company or organisation. A website can be accessed through a web browser.

Websites are designed using various languages chief among them HTML. Others are CSS, Javascript among others.

Web Design

Web design is the process of understanding the purpose of a website alongside with the needs of users and implementing User Interface and User Experience elements into a single entity called a webpage. This will involve how the content will be arranged on a website. Today having a website goes beyond just having one. It involves understanding: for what purpose is the website being build? Who will use the website? How does the website correlate with your brand.

There are three major aspects during web design.

Appearance

This involves the use of fonts colours and images on a website.

Layout

This is the structure of the appearance on a website. The layout of a website should foster trust with the visitor. The layout of a website should be in sync with the brand.

Content

Relevant and informative phrasing and images in relation to the main topic of a webpage. Once content has been provided it undergoes a process where it is made appealing not only to humans but also search engines.

Types of Websites

Websites can be put into two broad categories. These are Fixed content websites or static websites and Dynamic Websites. Today if you need to build a website you need to anticipate who the use will be and on what platform, browser and device they will be using to access the website.

Static Websites

These are the websites that are typical with small businesses. They comprise content that largely remains unchanged throughout that website iteration. They are generally cheaper to make because once the proper structure has be created, the webmaster closes the project until the website needs to be changed into a new one.

Dynamic Websites

These are the most common types of websites today. They are websites whose content undergoes constant change in terms of content and structure. They may include landing pages for different products, marketing goals or seasonal events. Blog post and e-commerce site fall under this category as well.

SUB CATEGORIES

The two above can be further broadened into the following subcategories.

Informational

Brochure/Catalogue

E-commerce

You can shop from your computer and make payments online.

Blogs

Conversational and topical websites that allow users to create and share articles

Personal

Gallery

Mobile First

The mobile first web design philosophy stems from the need for websites to be accessible on smartphones. The number of people using smartphones today is in the billions and with access to the internet growing everyday each one of these smartphone users has the potential to access your website. Therefore, an important question to ask is whether your website responds to the different screen size that the visitor is using and whether every piece of content is visible and legible.
